Nov 1/09 - Caribous Sweep Red Wings in Home Opener Series
Andrew Pearcey fired two goals and picked up one helper as the Clarenville Caribous rolled to their second victory in as many days, defeating the Deerlake Red Wings 5 to 2 on Sunday afternoon at the new Clarenville Events Centre. Ryan Penney, Dustin Russell and Brad Crann also found the back of the net to help the Caribous to a convincing win in what was a rematch of last seasons WCSHL final. Chris Peach and Rob Robinson scored for the Wings. It was the home opener weekend for the new look defending Herder Champs who had six new faces in their lineup. New rearguards David Victor, Travis Chapman, Brad Bussey and Freddy Earle were solid in front of Jason Churchill as well as new forwards Mike Sibley and Lloyd Sacrey. The Caribous dominated most of the game while out shooting the Wings 45 to 28. If not for Wings new import goaltender Paul Drew, the score could easily have been into double digits.
Saturday night was a much closer match up but ended in the same 5 to 2 score in favour of the home town team who after raising both the WCSHL and Herder banners, skated to their first win of the season in front of an estimated 1600 screaming fans. Goal scorers for the Caribous were Ryan Lauzon, Chris Mooney, Brad Crann, Ryan Penney and Derek Kent. Chris Peach and Rob Robinson hit the mark for the Wings. The Caribous out shot the Wings 35 to 31.
Standings after the first weekend of the regular season have the Caribous in first place with 4 points, the Royals in second with 3, the Cats in third with 2 and the winless Wings in the cellar without a point.
This weekend the Caribous will travel to the Pepsi Centre to face the Royals.
